I’m Nahom Hailegiorgis, a rising senior at Thomas A. Edison High School in Alexandria, Virginia. I’ve always been interested in STEM and computer science, but when I moved to Virginia during the pandemic, I noticed that many students didn’t know about the opportunities available in these fields. Mentoring younger students showed me that even knowing the basics, like what IB or the Global STEM program is, can make a huge difference. I mentor through my school’s student support program and STEMpower Her, where I teach young women how to build mobile apps using React Native. As an ICSC Ambassador, I want to help students get involved in competitions, workshops, and project-based learning, and connect them to real-world experiences through nonprofits. My goal is to create a space where students can learn, collaborate, and take the lead in STEM.
